My Child Wants to Dance... But Which Class Should I Choose?
If your child has announced they want to start dancing, you might be feeling excited… but also wondering where on earth to begin!
With ballet, tap, modern, acro, musical theatre, jazz, pom and cheer all on offer, it's completely understandable to wonder which class is the right one. In fact, it's one of the questions we're asked most often by new families.
The good news? You don't need to have all the answers before your child walks through our doors.
Over the years, we've learned that children have a wonderful way of surprising us.
The child who never stops moving might fall in love with the grace and structure of ballet. The quiet child who hides behind Mum on their first visit might discover a love of performing in musical theatre. And the child who comes along because they want to learn cartwheels might end up looking forward to tap every single week.
That's why our advice is always the same...
Don't worry too much about choosing the "perfect" class. Let your child discover what they enjoy.
Every Dance Style Has Something Different to Offer
One of the lovely things about dance is that every style develops children in different ways, and that's why we encourage children to experience more than one if they can.
Ballet
People sometimes think ballet is only for children who dream of becoming ballerinas, but that's really not the case.
Ballet provides the foundations for so many other styles of dance. It helps children develop good technique, balance, coordination and musicality, but it also teaches patience and perseverance. There's something really special about watching children stand a little taller each week, not just physically, but in confidence too.
Tap
If your child loves making noise, moving to music and has lots of energy, tap can be a fantastic choice.
It's great for developing rhythm, timing and coordination, and there's always plenty of smiles when children realise they're making music with their own feet!
Modern
Modern is full of energy, movement and expression.
Children enjoy travelling across the floor, learning leaps and developing strength, while also discovering different ways to move and express themselves through dance. It's a style that offers lots of variety and keeps children engaged.
Acro
Acro is hugely popular, and it's easy to see why.
Children build strength, balance and flexibility while working towards exciting new skills and achievements.
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is, "My child isn't flexible enough for acro."
The truth is, they don't need to be.
Acro helps children become stronger and more flexible over time. Nobody is expected to walk through the door already able to do the splits!
As They Grow...
As children become more confident, many enjoy exploring additional styles such as musical theatre, jazz, pom and cheer or, for our older students, contemporary.
Every style brings something different, and many of our dancers enjoy combining disciplines as they progress through the school.
The Biggest Worries We Hear From Parents
After many years of teaching, we've realised that parents often worry about the same things.
"My child is too shy."
Some of our most confident performers today were once the children standing quietly behind their parent on their first day.
"My child isn't the right shape or naturally talented."
Dance isn't about being a certain shape or already knowing what you're doing. Every child starts somewhere, and every child deserves the chance to discover what they're capable of.
"We've left it too late."
It's never too late to begin. We have classes for different ages, so children can start alongside others at a similar stage of their dance journey.
"What if we choose the wrong class?"
Honestly... you probably won't.
And if your child discovers another style they enjoy even more, that's wonderful too. Dance should be about exploring, learning and finding what makes them smile.
A Great Place to Start
For many younger children, our Mini Dance Programme offers a lovely introduction to dance.
Designed for children aged 3–5 years, it gives them the opportunity to experience ballet, tap and modern and acro throughout the week, allowing them to discover what they enjoy while building confidence, making friends and developing new skills in a supportive environment.
Final Thoughts
If you phoned me tomorrow and asked, "Which dance class should my child choose?", my answer probably wouldn't be a dance style.
I'd simply say...
"Come along and let them try."
Children really do have a lovely way of surprising us.
The class you think they'll love might not be the one they choose, and that's absolutely okay.
That's exactly why we offer every new student a two-week free trial. It gives your child the opportunity to experience classes, meet their teachers, make new friends and discover which style they enjoy most, without feeling that you have to make the "perfect" decision straight away.
At Alloa Ballet Company, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to explore, grow in confidence and discover the joy of dance in a supportive and encouraging environment. Whether they fall in love with ballet, tap, modern, acro, musical theatre or another style, we'll help them find the class where they feel happiest, and we can't wait to welcome them when they do.
Still Not Sure?
If you're still wondering which class would suit your child, we'd love to help.
Every child is different, and sometimes a quick chat is all it takes to point you in the right direction.
You can get in touch with us, ask as many questions as you like, or come along and enjoy our two-week free trial. There's no pressure, we're simply here to help your child find a class they'll love.
