Modern, Jazz & Commercial

Modern dance, with its high leaps and nimble steps is great for developing muscle strength – especially in the lower body. Unlike many dance styles, jazz dancing requires good flexibility in the arms and hands. Jazz routines may combine a number of complex steps and turns that requires large degrees of self discipline and memory power.

Our students have the opportunity to enter the Imperial Society of Teacher of Dance modern exams from grade to vocational level.

Through a carefully planned syllabus, combining modern dance, jazz and other dance styles, our students are trained to become disciplined and versatile dancers who have a professional attitude towards dance.

The children’s work is based on natural movements: walking, running, jumping and skipping. It is designed to encourage an imaginative and rapid response from beginners. Boys’ work has been developed to meet increasing demand for modern dance training for boys.

The Jazz Awards provide a basic grounding in modern jazz, and are ideal for the late beginner or as a recreational course of movement.

Commercial Dance is the name for any dance that is used with commercial music – music from the charts – so it covers a wide range of styles. This can include Street, Jazz, Hip-Hop and Contemporary. It is the type of dance seen in music videos, on the catwalk and at fashion shows, artist tours, advertising campaigns, corporate events, TV and film etc. It can mean anything from Beyonce’s Single Ladies (heavily jazz inspired) to Justin Timberlake’s newer stuff (lyrical hip hop). It is a great way of keeping fit and boosting self confidence whilst having fun!
